New Space, New Life for Herron
Release Date: 05/23/2005
Art opens minds. And doors. And buildings.
IUPUI celebrates all of the above with the dedication of Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hall, new home to the Herron School of Art and Design. The celebration (Friday, June 3, 735 W. New York Street) is open to the public. The festivities begin with the dedication at 3:00 p.m. and run until 8:00 p.m.
The new building houses more than 70 art and design studios, graduate studio space, a library, a 238-seat auditorium for guest artist lectures, four art galleries, a grand hall for public events, catering facilities, and outdoor sculpture gardens.
The $26.5 million project to build the New Herron School of Art and Design was made possible by a major gift from Sidney and Lois Eskenazi, a $9 million state appropriation, and the generous support of other donors, including Ruth Lilly, the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Robert Berkshire, and Drs. August and Margaret Watanabe. The new building lies on the west flank of Military Park, serving as a cultural link between downtown and IUPUI. The Herron galleries and sculpture gardens enhance the attractions of White River State Park, and neighbor other cultural destinations such as the Indiana Historical Society, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo, and White River Gardens.
Patrons of the arts and IUPUI supporters can still participate in the campaign, including the naming of studios, galleries, sculpture gardens, and even bricks. Please call 317-278-9472 for more information.
